Comparison
Skavelo vs product tour tools: Pendo, Appcues and Userpilot
Product tour tools let your team design guides, checklists and surveys by hand, and most add product analytics. Skavelo learns your web app on its own, shows each user the steps for whatever they ask on the live page, and can offer a walkthrough at moments you choose. Choose a tour tool for checklists, surveys and product analytics. Choose Skavelo to help users with any task without building or fixing tours. They can also run side by side.

Built by hand, or learned
With a tour tool, someone on your team opens a visual editor, clicks through the task and writes each step. That gives you full control over every word and every screen, and it takes time for each task you want covered.
Skavelo starts from your app itself. Give it the address and, for signed in screens, a test account. It opens each screen, notes the buttons and fields, and drafts walkthroughs for the tasks it finds. While it learns, it blocks every request that would save, send or delete anything.
When your product changes
Tour steps attach to elements on the page. Pendo’s own help docs describe guides breaking when the development team makes layout or content changes, and walk through updating a guide’s selector so it points at the right element again.
Skavelo re-learns your app every week, or after each deploy, and rereads only the pages that changed. Each run lists anything it couldn’t reach, so you know what to add.
Questions nobody planned for
A tour covers the tasks someone decided to build a tour for. Users ask about everything else too. Skavelo answers from what it learned, names the real buttons, and when no drafted walkthrough fits the question, it builds one and points at each step on the live page.
What tour tools do that Skavelo doesn’t
Tour tools are broader products. Most include product analytics, and they let you design announcements, checklists and surveys; Userpilot, for example, lists NPS surveys and a resource center. Some offer guidance inside mobile apps. Skavelo does none of these: it works inside web apps, and it logs conversations rather than measuring product usage.
Pendo, Appcues and Userpilot have also served customers for years. Skavelo is new.
How the pricing works
Tour tools charge by monthly active users: everyone who signs in counts, whether or not they open a guide. Skavelo charges by conversation: one person’s question and their follow-ups, until they’ve been quiet for 30 minutes. Users who never ask cost nothing. Skavelo’s Free plan includes 100 conversations a month, Starter is $99 a month for 2,500, and Growth is $399 a month for 10,000.
Which one fits
Choose a tour tool if
- You want product analytics, surveys and guides in one tool.
- You want to design a fixed onboarding sequence or announcement, word by word.
- You need guidance inside mobile apps.
- You need a vendor with a long track record.
Choose Skavelo if
- Your users ask about many tasks nobody will build a tour for.
- Your UI changes often and keeping tours working takes real time.
- You want help that answers, shows the steps on the live page, and offers a walkthrough at the right moment.
- You want to try it on your own product, free, before adding any code.
Using both
Skavelo’s widget runs in its own isolated layer, so it can sit on the same pages as a tour tool’s guides. One sensible split: the tour tool for a designed first run and your product analytics, and Skavelo for every question after that.
Questions
- Is Skavelo a product tour tool?
- Not in the usual sense. Nobody builds tours in Skavelo. It learns your web app on its own, answers users’ questions and shows them the steps on the live page, building a walkthrough for the question when none fits. It can also offer a walkthrough at moments you choose, like a new user’s first visit to a page; the walkthrough is one Skavelo learned, and it starts only when the user clicks.
- Does Skavelo replace Pendo, Appcues or Userpilot?
- It replaces the hand-built tours for teams whose main need is helping users get tasks done. It doesn’t replace product analytics, surveys or mobile guidance, so teams that rely on those may keep their tour tool and add Skavelo.
- Do we have to build or maintain walkthroughs?
- No. Skavelo drafts walkthroughs from what it learns and re-learns your app weekly or after each deploy. You can see what it learned in the dashboard and add notes or files where it needs more.
- Does Skavelo have product analytics?
- No. It logs every conversation, shows what users asked and which walkthroughs they finished or left early, and sends a weekly summary of the questions it couldn’t answer.
- How does pricing compare?
- Tour tools charge by monthly active users. Skavelo charges by conversation, so users who never ask cost nothing. Skavelo is free for 100 conversations a month, $99 a month for 2,500 and $399 a month for 10,000.
